Maine's three most popular whitewater rivers, the Dead, Kennebec, and Penobscot, have been open to commercial rafting for over three decades, meaning they boast good amenities as well as experienced outfitters. Beyond the allure of big, whitewater thrills, the region's primitive wilderness beauty and balmy summer temps make this a great locale for weekend escapes by Northeastern city slickers. The Dead and Kennebec are centered around the quiet town of West Forks, three hours north of Portland, Maine, and below the dammed headwaters of Flagstaff Lake, which nourishes the Dead during scheduled water releases. Further north, the Penobscot pummels through beautiful Ripogenus Gorge near Baxter State Park.
