The mountainous rump of western North Carolina, formed where the Appalachian chain makes its final push southwest toward Georgia, is a land of scenic 5,000-foot balds, deep canyons, and gushing mountain streams fed by plentiful year-round rain. No wonder, then, that the state is a mecca for outdoor recreation, especially for river rats. The Nantahala Gorge is the beating heart of the region's whitewater industry, with a ride down the Nantahala River being the classic Southeastern adventure. Closer to Asheville, the scenic French Broad River is ideal for a lazy summer float.
