Virginia River Rafting Guide

| SPLASH HAPPY: Rafting the James River in Richmond, Virginia (Scott K. Brown/courtesy, Virginia Tourism Corporation) |
While not known for its raging whitewater, Virginia offers some pleasant flatwater floats sprinkled with a few mild riffles, most notably on the bucolic South Fork of the Shenandoah River and the slightly more energetic James River. The James, in particular, gets some gas at the fall line between the eastern flank of the Appalachian Piedmont and the sedimentary rock of the Atlantic coastal plain, near Richmond. Take a ride here to get a brief taste of the whitewater thrill, or pack or rent a canoe, kayak, or inner tube to float other quieter stretches of river. Don't forget to bring a picnic!
