Bolstered by spring rains and winter snowmelt from the Cascade Mountains, the rivers of the Pacific Northwest carve through lush forest canyons, steep valleys, and scenic pastoral meadowlands. Not only offering some sterner Class III-IV rides on rivers like the Skykomish and Klickitat, several of Washingtons mostly lower-elevation rivers are easily accessible from metro enclaves like Seattle and Tacoma. Rivers including the Skykomish, Green River Gorge, Sauk, Skagit, and White Salmon promise a good mix of scenic floats, family fun, and short, more technical stretches of Class III-IV water.
