While the "Shadowy St. Joe" meets a peaceful and entirely undramatic end as it spills into the waters of popular Lake Coeur d'Alene in northern Idaho, the St. Joe's upstream story is an entirely different story. Kicking off some 90 miles east in the Bitterroot Mountains that divide Idaho and Montana, rivers trips here feature some 15 miles of fun Class II-III whitewater. The rugged forestlands through which the St. Joe cuts are part of the sprawling Idaho Pandhandle National Forest, a recent 2.5-million-acre amalgamation of the state's Coeur d'Alene, St. Joe and Kaniksu national forests.
