Depending on water levels and choice of craft, the Alberton Gorge stretch of Montana's Clark Fork River is a fun half- to full-day ride for rafters of all levels. It's located less than an hours drive from Missoula. Hidden in the woods from nearby I-90, the river cuts through a deep canyon with dramatic rose-colored cliffs thats home to wildlife including deer, bears, ospreys, and turkey vultures. This is a big volume, big ride river with lots of roller coaster waves. Better yet, its an ideal late-summer ride, with later runoff from the eastern slopes of the Bitterroot Mountains providing plenty frothy fodder when other regional rivers are nearing their low-water mark.
