The Yellowstone is an epic river in an epic landscape. A tributary of Montana’s upper Missouri, the Yellowstone drains a huge swath of southern Montana and northern Wyoming, including the high peaks of the Rockies. It is the longest free-flowing river in the lower 48. Mostly noted for its trout fishing and sweeping scenery, rafting options on the Yellowstone run from the serene to the rowdy. The biggest whitewater is to be found through the upper stretches of Paradise Valley and down through the steep cliff-lined maw of Yankee Jim Canyon, an historic thoroughfare for early Indians and fur trappers. Gardiner-based outfitters offer both full- and half-day floats, with additional, quieter stretches through Paradise Valley being ideal for families and seniors.
