An Authentic Montana Working Ranch
The Rocking Z is an authentic working ranch that is run by the Wirth Family. Zack and Patty Wirth are fourth generation Montanans, and have unparalleled knowledge of the area, its history, and their horses. Also working on the ranch, as wranglers and everything else are two of their six children; Maria and Anna. This unique family setup offers a friendly and warm atmosphere that is perfect for couples, singles and families alike. The family is sharing their life and their horses with you.
Location
The Rocking Z Ranch is surrounded by the splendor of the Rocky Mountains. We invite you to enjoy the stunning scenery while learning new riding skills and enjoying the relaxed Montana way of life. Located in between Helena and Great Falls, in a valley between the Missouri and the Great Divide, we are able to offer wide arrays of activities. The Rocking Z Ranch is nestled at the foot of Mitchell Mountain, thirteen miles east of the Great Divide and ten miles west of the famous Missouri River.
Activities
The Rocking Z is very pround of its riding program. For good riders there are horses you will really enjoy that are responsive and do what you ask. The rides go up creek bottoms to riding the mountain ridges. The varied terrain allows for trotting and cantering as well as walking. Three of the rides are large circles of about 15 miles. Beginners get horses they can learn on. You will learn to really ride and be your horse's leader. You will probably be cantering by the end of the week. We use Parelli Natural Horsemanship and enjoy sharing our knowledge and experience with our guests. Your wranglers are all at least Level 2 Parelli Natural Horsemanship students. Fly fishing is superb on Little Prickly Pear Creek on the ranch or on the Missouri River. At least once a week we float the Missouri River for about 3 hours in the afternoon or we take a full day and enjoy a longer section of the river and the spectacular cliffs and wildlife. Many guests enjoy shooting the 12 gauge shotgun at the clay pigeons. Gates of the Mountains was named by Lewis and Clark when they first came up the Missouri River in 1805. You can enjoy a 2 hour boat ride through the spectacular limestone cliffs and see why it was named. For birding enthusiasts, all seasons have highlights with nearly 250 different species in the area. Zack is an expert in history, geology, and archeology of the area. He will answer all your questions and tell you numerous stories. In July and August there are area rodeos we will drive everyone interested to.
Accommodations
There are a total of eight rooms in two separate buildings. The guest rooms were built new in 2000. The spacious rooms, 18 X 24, include beds, private facilities, cast iron stove, and an easy chair. The beds in the rooms vary with either a king size bed, queen size beds or twin beds. The rooms open to a covered porch where you may relax and enjoy the view.
Children's Program
Children of all ages are welcome. Children six and up get to spend much of the day learning to ride and play games on their horses. They get to hike trails above our cliffs for a great view. There are always kittens to play with. The creek has many shallows as well as deep holes and a great afternoon can be spent playing there being in and out of the water, learning about bugs and plants. All of these activities are guided by a great young adult. The children feel like it is their idea without a schedule. In the late afternoon adults and kids can have a great time playing volleyball or horseshoes in the back yard.
Teenagers have a wonderful time. Anna will take them on extra rides and jumps if this is what they like. Card games games are very popular as is playing music and pool. Anna and her teenage friends that work here make sure all teenagers have fun all the time.
