A Montana Working Cattle Ranch
The vast Centennial Valley in southwestern Montana hasn't changed much in the last 100 years: you can literally see for 50 miles from one end of the valley to the other - and all that you'll see are the five surrounding mountain chains. It is an undeveloped, remote place of spectacular vistas, a plethora of wildlife, and honest-to-goodness working ranches. Huge herds of cattle are still moved from horseback, neighbors still stop and chat out their pickup windows about the weather or the latest wolf sighting, and life is enjoyed at a slower pace.
Activities
All of our cattle work is done from the backs of good ranch horses. Because we calve during the spring (in order to be in sync with nature) we ride most of everyday during June and July. Then it's time to gather and brand in August. The rest of the year we continuously monitor the range from horseback, and make sure our cattle herds are on the freshest pasture. Working ranch guests are invited to ride along with us each day as we go about our daily work. And if part of the day entails fixing fence, taking out mineral, or some other pickup-bound chore, guests can either come along and help the cowboys, or are welcome to explore the valley on their own, or with a hired guide.
We work very closely with a number of professionals, including fishing guides, a recognized bird-watching guide, a geologist and a full-service pack-and-guide business in Southwest Montana that is licensed and insured to operate with horses and mules. Take advantage of some of the most famous fly-fishing trout streams and rivers, including the Beaverhead, Big Hole, Madison and Ruby Rivers.
Accommodations & Meals
After a great day in the saddle, we gather each night at the dining hall for a delicious meal (including ranch-raised, grass-fed beef) and some big laughs about the day's events before retiring to elegant homestead accommodations.
Working Ranch Packages
This package includes deluxe accommodations in our Smith House or Brundage Site cabins, all on-ranch activities, delicious saddle bag lunches, "ranch-gourmet" suppers, and your choice of breakfast foods delivered to your guest house. What is not included: transportation, alcohol, off-ranch activities, gratuity and lodging tax ($4/person/day).
